According to Dr Ninian Smart there are 7 Dimensions or sets of characteristics by which any religion might be identified as a religion.

They are: 

1.Doctrinal

2.Mythological

3.Ethical

4.Ritual

5.Experiential

6.Institutional/Social

7.Material
